1. When hitting the pipes, pay attention to the pitch of the resulting sound.
2. Try playing a simple tune.

WHY

When you hit the pipe, you stimulate the air inside it to vibrate. This is how a sound wave is created, with its properties dependent on the pipe length.

The length of the resulting wave is four times the length of the pipe. As you will easily notice, the longer the pipe, and the longer the sound wave, the lower the pitch. Conversely, a shorter pipe means a shorter wave and a higher pitch.
