A space strongman
A space strongman
HOW
1. Lift the weight labelled ‘Earth’ and feel its weight. This is a weight of 12 kg.
2. Then lift other weights and check the weight of the Earth’s 12 kg on other planets and the Moon.
WHY
The bench contains weights of the same size and different weights. The weights have been chosen to correspond to the weight of the Earth of 12kg on the other planets and the Moon.
Weighing Earth’s 1 kg on other objects in the Solar System would give the following values:
• Mercury – 0.378 kg,
• Venus – 0.907 kg,
• Earth – 1 kg,
• Moon – 0.166 kg,
• Mars – 0.377 kg,
• Jupiter – 2.528 kg,
• Saturn – 1.064 kg,
• Uranus – 0.889 kg,
• Neptune – 1.125 kg.
The lightest weighs 2 kg and corresponds to Earth’s 12 kg on the Moon, the heaviest weighs more than 30 kg and corresponds to Earth’s 12 kg on Jupiter.
