HOW

1. Rotate the compass around the vertical axis.
2. Note that the pointer (magnetic needle) consistently points in the same direction.

WHY

The metal needle of the compass always points in the same direction because it is affected by the Earth’s magnetic field. A compass is an instrument built almost in the same way as a standard compass. Compared to the latter instrument, it contains additional elements, such as a sight.
