HOW

1. Turn the wheel and change the position of the hourglass.
2. Observe the metal filings.

WHY

The falling filings enter the magnetic field of a magnet placed under the hourglass. They line up along the force lines of this field. The object formed from the filings is the result of the interaction of magnetic and gravitational field forces.
