Lateral force

HOW

1. To conduct the experiment you need a second person.
2. Grab a taut rope and lift it. Then release it.
3. As you release the rope, have the other person pull vigorously on the loose end of the rope – so that the lifted weight does not fall.

WHY

By acting on the rope with an upward force, you get a component of your own force. It is directed diagonally along the taut rope. The value of this component is greater than the vertically upward force created by your effort.

In this way, you are acting on the weight with a greater force. When it rises and you release the rope, the inertia of the system allows the other person to pull and tighten the loose rope for a brief moment before the weight drops.
